The Man On The Moon’s Next Adventure
The story of Mad Solar begins in childhood. A psychedelic Saturday morning cartoon chronicles Scott Mescudi’s journey from Earth to the stars, reborn in a solar explosion.
True to form, the entire sequence was hand-animated in-house on cel, combining technicolor tones with the nostalgic haze of projected light.
The second story of Mad Solar swirls into a black hole, leaving the laws of reality behind. Cosmic dust and energy form and reform in a barrage of typographic treatments, seeking a true identity for Mad Solar.
This sequence overlays hand-painted lettering on a 3D environment, weaving the past and present together with analog CRT glow.
The third story of Mad Solar takes us to other worlds and beyond. A solar flare tears through the moon’s magnetic field, unleashing mad solar and lunar energies across the galaxy.
This sequence was brought to life in a simulated three-dimensional planetary system, built in collaboration with Shane Griffin. Renderings of the moon’s surface and the sun’s power are warped through VHS distortion.
Mad Solar is a platform for the creative visions of Scott Mescudi, a.k.a. Kid Cudi. From films and television shows, to animations, music, and fashion, Mad Solar is defined by the eclectic, ever-evolving tastes of its creators.
GrandArmy worked with Mad Solar to craft a brand identity that could stand side by side with the psychedelic, experimental legacy of Kid Cudi’s discography. Anchored by a dynamic wordmark, the brand comes to life in three animated short films, each produced with a distinctive technique that combines Mescudi’s love of 80’s and 90’s media with a futuristic, multifaceted approach to branding that evolves the narrative with each new creation.
